2007: MoveOn, General Petraeus and Obama, Oh My!

MoveOn Scrubs “General Betray Us” Page From Website . . . Flashback to 2007, Obama Skipped Senate Vote to Condemn MoveOn . . .

Wait, there’s more….from ABC News, February 2008, MoveOn endorses Obama for President:

Obama touted the group’s first-ever presidential endorsement in a statement released by MoveOn.

“In just a few years, the members of MoveOn have once again demonstrated that real change comes not from the top-down, but from the bottom-up,” Obama wrote. “From their principled opposition to the Iraq war – a war I also opposed from the start – to their strong support for a number of progressive causes, MoveOn shows what Americans can achieve when we come together in a grassroots movement for change. I thank them for their support and look forward to working with their members in the weeks and months ahead.”

Heck of a job Barry.

MoveOn’s executive director, full of hopeychangey kool aid, beams to his supporters:

(MoveOn.org’s mobilization efforts are credited with helping the Democratic win the House of Representative in 2006.)

“Our members’ endorsement of Senator Obama is a clear call for a new America at this critical moment in history,” wrote Eli Pariser, MoveOn.org’s executive director in the statement.

“Seven years of the disastrous policies of the Bush Administration have left the country desperate for change. We need a President who will bring to bear the strong leadership and vision required to end the war in Iraq, provide health care to every American, deal with our climate crisis, and restore America’s standing in the world. The enormity of the challenges require someone who knows how to inspire millions to get involved to change the direction of our country, and someone who will be willing to change business as usual in Washington. Senator Barack Obama has proved he can and will be that President.”

Full disclosure: I was an activist member of MoveOn until their attack on General Petraeus with the belief politicians, not the troops, should be held accountable for war strategy. Obama, “I’m the Boss of You”, proved that with the firing of General McChrystal.

  1. Oh, I remember that history! I signed on for that ad!
Then, the senate moved to censure Moveon for it. Hillary voted against it, Obama didn’t show up that day. Therefore Moveon endorsed him in the primaries.

    • Hillary took her position for free speech, which MoveOn should have been grateful for. But her wheels were beginning to fall of the bus about this time, so MoveOn threw their support to the “anti-war” candidate….who bravely (lol!) gave a speech….to an anti-war crowd in Chicago. It was never recorded or mentioned by the media at the time. The Trib and the Sun Times scoured their archives, and nothing turned up!

      We’ve been punked!

I remember this history quite well myself.

It was the day that MoveOn endorsed Obama that I exited their fold.

NYS is correct… only Hillary voted *for* Move-On, when push came to shove. Obama was absent and, yet, that did not stop MoveOn from stabbing Hill in the back.

    Eff MoveOn.

    • Hi SYD, MoveOn should never have endorsed a candidate, and just stay focused on the WH war policy. Remember, civilians are in charge of our military, so calling Petraeus a traitor violated my Suppor the Troops, Not the War policy 😀
