As the horrific details of the Fort Hood shootings were unfolding on t.v. yesterday, Shep Smith of Fox News throws it to the President’s live comments addressing the situation. Americans, looking for the reassurance we were not under attack, thinking this could be a successful Fort Dix Terror Plot? Nope. Obama begins with 2 minutes of oddball shout-outs to a few people in the audience of the gig he was attending. Feel the disconnect…
Opening comments:
THE PRESIDENT: Please, everybody have a seat. Let me first of all just thank Ken and the entire Department of the Interior staff for organizing just an extraordinary conference. I want to thank my Cabinet members and senior administration officials who participated today. I hear that Dr. Joe Medicine Crow was around, and so I want to give a shout-out to that Congressional Medal of Honor* winner. Itās good to see you. (Applause.)
My understanding is, is that you had an extremely productive conference. I want to thank all of you for coming and for your efforts, and I want to give you my solemn guarantee that this is not the end of a process but a beginning of a process, and that we are going to follow up. (Applause.) We are going to follow up. Every single member of my team understands that this is a top priority for us. I want you to know that, as I said this morning, this is not something that we just give lip service to. And we are going to keep on working with you to make sure that the first Americans get the best possible chances in life in a way thatās consistent with your extraordinary traditions and culture and values.
Now, I have to say, though, that beyond that, I plan to make some broader remarks about the challenges that lay ahead for Native Americans, as well as collaboration with our administration, but as some of you might have heard, there has been a tragic shooting at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas.
There. Feel better? Reassured? While he eventually addressed Fort Hood, literally reading his “heartfelt compassion” from note cards as though he had no heart, we need to remind our President he is the glue that holds our country together and start behaving like it. Stop campaigning and start leading!
Many thanks to Hot Air for the video and transcript.
Also, best online coverage seems to be at Hot Air using many media sources with open discussions.
Update: Why was Nidal Malik Hasan still in the Army? And is Obama having problems addressing this situation because:
Fort Hood shooter was member of Homeland Security Panel advising Obama!

As my friends on the libby left are just giddy over punishing Beck and Fox News by forcing sponsors to take their money elsewhere, William Jacobson at Legal Insurrection tells us why we should be happy…..
1. The boycott will fail, as do virtually all boycotts.
2. The failure of the boycott will be a huge victory for freedom of speech.
3. The failure of the boycott will diminish the power of the boycotters.
4. The diminished power of the boycotters will empower grassroots opposition to health care restructuring and cap-and-trade.
5. The boycott reveals once again that many liberals are hypocrites who only want freedom for their speech.
6.The boycott reveals that the left-wing blogosphere is afraid of other voices being heard.
7. The boycott reminds us that large corporations are spineless in the face of liberal pressure groups.
8. The boycott reminds us also that we should not confuse large corporations with free markets or free enterprise or freedom.
9. The boycott will tell us whether Fox News has a spine.
10.The boycott is a reflection that Democrats have few positive arguments in support of their agenda and need to create enemies.
And from the comments section, you learn these little nuggets:
It probably took Geico .0000001 seconds to boycott Glenn. Geico is a subsidiary of Bershire Hathaway, owned by Warren Buffet (right on their home page) And the owner of Progressive was right behind. His political contributions include Moveon.org, America Coming Together, and The Democratic party. No arm twisting there.
~and~
Color of Change was co-founded by Van Jones, Obama’s green jobs czar. This boycott comes not long after Beck did some unflattering pieces about Van Jones. Plus, Color of Change has publicly declared that the boycott is in response to Beck’s criticism of Obama.
A group co-founded by by a czar within the Obama Admin. is boycotting a critic of the Obama Admin.
Not very cricket.
Had enough? Can you hear the people sing ?!
I sure can š See you at the 9-12-09 March on Washington and Glenn Beck recently announced he will be there with his team to make sure our voices are indeed heard with our spirit and unity seen!

Or as iOwnTheWorld so delicately put it:
For Every Clownfart Who Has Ever Spittled The Term āFaux Newsā
Also, Hot Air’s Ed Morrissey asks and explains:
Why did OāDonnell act like a middle-school bully instead of a news interviewer? Apart from the fact that OāDonnell is a middle-school bully on air, Schiff wants to run against Chris Dodd for his Senate seat, and Schiff opposes ObamaCare. Instead of allowing Schiff to actually explain why, OāDonnell simply shouts over him and issues ridiculous time demands, and does just about everything short of sticking his fingers in his ears and yelling āNA-NA-NA-I-CANāT-HEAR-YOUā when Schiff tries to explain his positions.
No matter who’s side you’re on, it’s a difficult interview to watch. No wonder Fox News clobbers all the other cable news channels’ ratings COMBINED !

So, buried in the gossipy Washington Whispers section of US News and World Reports I see this heartwarming story. It could have easily read “Fox News Saves Air America’s Life”. So it must not be true? Enjoy….because it has a happy ending š
Greta Van Susteren Saves Ana Marie Cox’s Life
May 15, 2009 04:57 PM ET | Paul Bedard, Nikki Schwab
By Nikki Schwab, Washington WhispersAlthough CNN’s Sanjay Gupta rejected his offer of the surgeon general’s job, President Obama shouldn’t give up looking at TV news personalities for inspiration. May we suggest Fox’s Greta Van Susteren? She doesn’t play a doctor on TV, but she recently did in real life, potentially saving the life of Washington blogger and Air America Radio host Ana Marie Cox.
Cox, sitting alone, and Van Susteren, with her hubby, John Coale, were aboard a New York-to-Washington Amtrak train last month when Cox suddenly fell ill, her throat tightening from an allergic reaction. “They have this lentil salad on the train, and it happened almost immediately after that,” recalled Cox, who is not sure what caused the “indescribably terrifying” attack.
Alarmed, Van Susteren’s husband nudged Greta, who moved in on Cox. “She was like ‘I think I know what is happening to you. Don’t worry about it. We’re going to get you a Benadryl,’ ” Cox remembered a calming Van Susteren saying. A food allergy sufferer herself, Greta was ready with a backup plan: She carries an EpiPen epinephrine shot for her own emergencies. “If she hadn’t been there, I don’t know what would have happened. It would have been a thousand times worse,” says Cox.
The two didn’t see each other afterward until last weekend’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, when the star of On the Record With Greta Van Susteren and the host of Air America’s The Inside Story bumped into each other in the ladies’ room. Cox offered a very sincere “thank you for saving my life.” Later, Van Susteren told us, “I didn’t do anything heroic. I did what anyone would have done.” And she had a suggestion for Amtrak: Keep Benadryl onboard.
