My friend Newsbird blogged about the March 2010 cover of Essence magazine whose target readers are young, black females, it’s a good read. I wanted to learn more about the magazine and visited their website to read the articles…..afterall, they love their Obama covers, this was the third appearance.

So why then would Essence have an article trashing another magazine for being “too white” ? From the website:

Momlogic blogger Kimberly Seals Allers criticizes the Vanity Fair Young Hollywood spread for not featuring any Black stars. The writer asks, “What about Gabourey Sidibe from ‘Precious’ and Zoe Saldana?”

“I could have stomached the photo spread; I’m pretty much used to African Americans being excluded from mainstream Hollywood.” She continues, “But they really went too far with the descriptive language in the accompanying story with each waiflike actress getting her respective props for “downy-soft cheeks,” a “button nose,” “patrician looks and celebrated pedigree,” “dewy, wide-eyed loveliness,” or “Ivory-soap-girl features.” Ivory soap-girl features???”

Perhaps Essence will feature those very talented actresses, Zoe and Gabourey, on their cover in the near future. They are both inspiring and accomplished young ladies. Would Essence have put John and Cindy McCain on their cover had they won the White House ? Three times ?

Kudos to Essence magazine for celebrating “Black” Hollywood Awards ! Right?
